Scope
This policy applies to regular full-time and regular (non-temporary) part-time administrators and staff.
Policy
The University recognizes the difficulty of losing a loved one and provides employees with paid time off to grieve.
- In the event of the death of a member of the employee’s immediate family, the University allows up to five (5) workdays of leave with pay.
- In the event of the death of a relative who is not in the employee’s immediate family, the University allows up to three (3) workdays of leave with pay.
- In the event of the death of a close relationship who is not a family member, the University allows up to one workday of leave with pay.
Should additional days be requested, they may be taken as personal days or vacation days, or they may be taken without pay, subject to the discretion of the employee’s supervisor.
Definition of Immediate Family Members: Spouse, child, other members of the employee's household, parent, sibling, grandchild, grandparent, mother- and father-in-law, sister- and brother-in-law, stepchild, stepsibling, and stepparent.

University employees and their household and family members have access to free and confidential services and resources to obtain grief-related support from the Employee Assistance Program.
