- Marina Sorochinski
Assistant Professor
Dr. Marina Sorochinski is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Division of Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, and Homeland Security. She is an investigative psychologist, who received her PhD Psychology (with specialization in Psychology & Law) from CUNY Graduate Center, and her MA in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Dr. Sorochinski's main area of specialty and expertise is in applying psychological principles and rigorous empirical methods to improving police investigations.She has extensive experience leading research projects, teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students.
She has worked in collaboration with national and international academic faculty as well as government agencies, including the FBI and South African Police Service.
Dr. Sorochinski specializes in analyzing behavioral patterns in violent crimes through the lens of investigative psychology. Her research encompasses the development of linkage models and evidence-based profiling for serious violent offenses, as well as exploring the dynamics of cyber-sexual abuse.
Dr. Sorochinski's research on wrongful convictions is another significant area of her work and reflects her passion for justice. She explores the procedural challenges and investigative issues that contribute to wrongful convictions, particularly in cases involving serial violent crimes. Additionally, she examines the profound impact these wrongful convictions have on the families of the accused, focusing on the emotional, social, and economic hardships they endure, even after the convictions are overturned.
Her expertise and contributions have been recognized through various scholarships and awards, including a prestigious research fellowship from the National Institute of Justice. An active contributor to the academic community, Dr. Sorochinski frequently publishes and presents her findings in respected forums nationally and internationally.
Dr. Sorochinski is an avid and passionate educator who believes that a vital part of being a successful teacher is the ability to not only effectively deliver the material, but also to empower students to strive high and give them the tools and skills that will help them succeed far beyond the classroom.
