“To me, meaningful service is all about reciprocity and strengthening the community in
which we live. When both those who are serving, and those who are being served, learn from
and benefit one another, that is meaningful service.”
–Ashley Gabriel ’19, The School of Education
Join us for our 23rd Annual University Service Day!
Saturday, September 21, 2024
What is University Service Day?
On this day, the St. John’s University family joins together to serve our communities locally, nationally & globally. Previous volunteers have served the hungry in soup kitchens, visited residents at nursing homes, engaged in fun activities with disadvantaged children, cleaned and landscaped area parks, painted rooms in nearby schools and community centers, and provided assistance with so many other important projects. Working together in generosity and love as a Vincentian Family, we show exactly “What a difference a day makes!”
Why Saturday?
Every year, University Service Day is held on the Saturday before the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul, whose compassion and zeal for service continue to inspire so many to work toward social justice and the reduction of poverty. This special day is part of St. John’s University’s Founder’s Week, a series of events and programs dedicated to deepening our knowledge and understanding of our Vincentian heritage.

“Mahatma Gandhi put it best when he said, ‘The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself
in the service of others.’ Participating in service teaches me that filling the gap starts with
lending a helping hand and learning from various experiences. There’s never a bad time to do
a good deed.”
–Daniella Malliae, '20, The School of Education
