At Research Month Poster Presentations, Students and Faculty Share Ideas and Discoveries
The scholarly achievements of more than 400 St. John’s students and faculty were exhibited on Thursday, April 19, as the University hosted Research Month poster presentations inside Taffner Field House on the Queens, NY, campus.

St. John’s Announces New Materials Research Society University Chapter
St. John’s University now offers students in its science disciplines new opportunities for research, professional development, and graduate school preparation. The Materials Research Society (MRS) has approved a petition to create a University chapter at St. John’s.

Mark Movsesian Builds His Scholarship in Religious Freedom as a Princeton University Visiting Fellow

Dr. Ipshita Pal receives grant from the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM)
Ipshita Pal, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Division of Health and Human Services, College of Professional Studies has received a grant from the Society of Human Resource Management. The grant will be use to fund a study on employee Health and well-being in the US. This grant is a continuation of Dr. Pal research in this area from her time at Columbia University. Spring Reflections: The Importance of Research
On the occasion of the release of our Spring newsletter, I would like to share some reflections by travelling back to our first newsletter in Fall 2016 in which I referred to one of my favorite quotes from Kurt Lewin (paraphrased): it takes a lot of theory to make a good practice. And travel back we must since I want to share with you, students, alumni, faculty, and friends, our most recent journey towards increasing relevance and rigor in our academic programs....
Australian Exchange
Ten students from Australian Catholic University (ACU) are studying at St. John’s University this semester. The students, representing four of ACU’s five campuses—Ballarat, Brisbane, Canberra, and Melbourne—all study early childhood and childhood education. Students are completing course work in Education at St. John’s and fieldwork in Special Education in local school settings. In July, The School of Education will complete the exchange when a cohort of students visits ACU’s Melbourne campus to live and study. Don McClure, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, will accompany the group.

Dolores Beckham '05Ed.D. Honored Posthumously
“She pushed her teachers to take part in every opportunity available to them in order to make them better. She knew that if the teachers had more learning experiences, the students would benefit as well. It was always about the children.” These words were written of the late Dolores Beckham ’05Ed.D., a 38-year veteran educator with the New York City Department of Education, who was honored posthumously when 80th Street at 34th Avenue in Jackson Heights, NY, was renamed Dr. Dolores Beckham Way at a ceremony on September 28. Michael Sampson, Ph.D., Dean, offered remarks on behalf of St. John’s University and The School of Education.

Faculty Recognition
Evan T. Ortlieb, Ph.D., St. John’s University Professor and Coordinator of the Literacy Program in the Department of Education Specialties, was chosen for this year's Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers' A.B. Herr Award for outstanding contributions to the field of literacy in 2017.
