Writing Across Communities hosted a Fall Faculty Writing Retreat for St. John’s University faculty at nearby Thomas Berry Place in Queens, NY, from October 27 through 29. This retreat brought together faculty members conducting exciting research in a wide array of disciplines and aimed to create space for them to complete a writing project for publication.

The retreat featured a workshop conducted by the Emmy award-winning writer, performer, and trainer, Kayhan Irani. Through a series of meditation and writing exercises, faculty members were guided to revisit their writerly vision and purpose.

In addition to productive writing sessions, the retreat offered opportunities for faculty to connect, build community, and relax. Faculty enjoyed time outside on the beautiful grounds of the retreat center and gathered for a film screening and discussion one evening. They also visited the Queens Theatre to see the Calpulli Mexican Dance Company’s performance of Día de los Muertos, a performance about love, loss, and a celebration of life.

Feedback from attendees highlighted the retreat center’s peaceful environment and structured writing time. Faculty described the retreat as “inspiring and encouraging” and noted that it “provided an excellent combination of actual writing, inspiring writing, and community building.”

“This underscores the need for more opportunities for faculty to gather off campus to focus on writing and research, reflect on their goals, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration and community building,” said Tamara Issak, Director of Writing Across Communities.

In addition to extended writing retreats, day-long writing retreats are offered periodically throughout the academic year by Writing Across Communities and the Center for Teaching and Learning. To be added to the mailing list and receive notifications about future writing retreat opportunities, please email [email protected].
