Note well, all St. John’s University alumni eager to come together and celebrate with their fellow Johnnies: the week of October 14–22 has been set for St. John’s annual Fall Homecoming.
The University’s October tradition is when all graduates are welcomed back to alma mater. Festivities include the popular Red Storm Parade on Friday, October 21; Basketball Tip-Off, also on October 21; and Homecoming Fest on Saturday, October 22. On Sunday, October 23, the St. John’s Women’s Soccer Team plays Marquette University at Belson Stadium at 1 p.m.
Other popular events include 2022 induction ceremonies for the St. John’s Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 22; and the Alumni and Community Mass at St. Thomas More Church on Sunday, October 23 at 11 a.m.
For more information about the festivities, visit the Homecoming website. Some Homecoming Week events are free; others require tickets. Alumni are encouraged to register soon and use the code FALL22 for reduced-price tickets.
“It’s an exciting time to be at St. John’s,” said Mark Andrews, Director, Office of Alumni Relations. “It’s a time to celebrate relationships from the past and create new ones with your fellow Johnnies.”
New to the Queens, NY, campus celebration this year is the Alumni Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholarship: Carnesecca 3-on-3 Balanced Man Program Fundraiser. This three-on-three basketball tournament for alumni, students, Sigma Phi Epsilon members, and their friends hopes to raise $50,000 to fully endow the Balanced Man Scholarship. The scholarship will enable Sigma Phi Epsilon to identify and support male students who embody the fraternity’s ideals of leadership and service. Students and alumni can enter the tournament individually or as a team.
Events on the Queens campus begin on Friday, October 21 at 4:30 p.m. with a parade of St. John’s faithful along the roads within the campus. Students, alumni, and other members of the St. John’s community are invited to march or to participate as spectators. Participants are encouraged to decorate their cars or parade with a banner.
Tip-Off represents the unofficial start of the St. John’s basketball season. The men’s and women’s teams are introduced and Coaches Mike Anderson (men’s) and Joe Tartamella (women’s) address fans. Both teams then participate in on-court exhibitions.
Homecoming Fest on Saturday remains one of the most popular events of the week. Guests can enjoy a barbecue, fall-themed beverages, desserts, giveaways, and attractions for kids, including an obstacle course, inflatables, face painters, and balloon artists.
The 2022 Athletics Hall of Fame induction honors former student-athletes and coaches who represent the best values of St. John’s University. The 2022 class features baseball coaching legend Ed Blankmeyer; Olympians Priscilla Frederick (track and field) and Daryl Homer (fencing); former St. John’s University Men’s Basketball star and retired professional National Basketball Association player and All-Star Jayson Williams and basketball standouts Jerry Houston and Nadirah McKenith; and lacrosse All-American Kieran McArdle.
