St. John’s University’s Staten Island, NY, campus upheld its dedication to academic excellence and student success during this unprecedented time by holding a Mentored Research Student Miniconference via Webex on April 16.
Part of the University’s annual Research Month, the first-ever Mentored Research Student Miniconference brought together faculty mentors and their students for presentations of their collaborative research, as well as independent studies and Ozanam scholarship. The miniconference was the culminating event for research projects that students have been undertaking with faculty members since the beginning of the academic year.
Students presented on a wide range of topics, spanning the fields of English, finance, homeland security, mathematics and computer science, psychology, speech pathology and audiology, and social justice/Ozanam scholarship. A faculty jury awarded Vice Provost Excellence in Scholarship awards to students for their poster and PowerPoint presentations.
Students shared their postgraduate plans during the event, which reflected the Staten Island faculty Research Committee’s yearlong focus on undergraduate research pedagogy.
“We could not let this crisis take away what we love about our St. John’s academic community: our faculty members’ tireless engagement with their students, and our students’ conscientious efforts to shape their future,” said Robert Fanuzzi, Ph.D., Associate Provost and Director of Civic Engagement on the Staten Island campus.
