Accounting Professor Dorata Appointed to State Society Education Committee

Professor of Accountancy Nina T. Dorata, Ph.D., C.P.A., has been recognized for her contributions to accounting education by the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, which named her Vice Chair of its Future of Accounting Education Committee.

“I am honored to be selected as Vice Chair of NYSSCPA’s Committee on the Future of Accounting Education,” she said. “I value the committee’s important role to help shape new directions of higher education in accountancy and thus prepare aspiring professionals for the future of the profession.”

One of the challenges facing the Committee is the modernization of the CPA exam, a grueling four-part examination that has been revised four times in the last 18 months.

“The content of the CPA exam is experiencing evolutionary change,” said Dr. Dorata. “I am honored to work with committee members to navigate the evolution and aid our academic colleagues as relevant curriculum changes are made to not only prepare students for the CPA exam, but also meet the needs of our profession in hiring those entering the field of accountancy.”

Dr. Dorata served as Assistant Chair of Tobin’s Accountancy Department for seven years and as Department Chair for two more before becoming the College’s Director of Business Undergraduate education in February 2019. In that role, she is responsible for an interdisciplinary program that boasts approximately 450 majors, which makes it Tobin’s second largest major after Finance.

Before entering academia, Dr. Dorata was an auditor for Price Waterhouse & Co., an Assistant Vice President of Corporate Accounting for E.F. Hutton & Co. Inc., and a Director of Financial Reporting at Staff Builders Inc.

A two-time Tobin graduate, Dr. Dorata earned her Ph.D. in Management from Rutgers University in 2003. Since returning to Tobin in 2006, she has received several academic honors and teaching awards. She has also been recognized for her role in starting the University’s participation in the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, in partnership with Food Bank for New York City, which offers free tax assistance to income-qualifying taxpayers.
