St. John’s University Campus Ministry sponsored its fourth annual Brothers/Sisters’ Night at the Student Mass in St. Thomas More Church on Sunday, September 16, at 5:30 p.m.
Brothers/Sisters’ Night provides students with an opportunity to meet Sisters and Brothers serving the local Church. This year, 97 Sisters and Brothers representing 30 congregations attended; this was a significant increase over last year, when 51 Sisters and Brothers participated, representing 14 congregations.
“The success of the evening was the presence and the witness of so many Sisters and Brothers committed to the gospel and making Christ known and loved in their various ministries throughout the local dioceses,” said Br. Mike Sheerin, F.M.S., Campus Minister for Faith Formation and Leadership and the evening’s coordinator. “Our students never saw so many Religious in one place who were so willing to share their time and thought. It was the Church alive!”
Newly professed Marianist Brother Andrew Joseph Santoriello, S.M., shared his vocation story with students after Communion. He reflected on discernment as a prayerful exploration, with twists and turns leading to a better understanding of his call to follow Christ as poor, chaste, and obedient.
Following Mass, the Religious and students enjoyed a pizza party. “It was a great night to meet all different communities that I never knew existed,” said Eric Mirkov, who is in the M.B.A. program in Finance in The Peter J. Tobin College of Business. “It was interesting to hear the Brothers’ stories about their faith life and how they live out their community’s mission.”
