Jennifer Mora-Amaya, an actuarial science junior in the School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science at The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship by the New York Insurance Scholarship Foundation, Inc.

“I am so grateful that the New York Insurance Scholarship Foundation believes in me enough to present me with this award,” said the native of Paterson, N.J. and graduate of Mary Help of Christians Academy. “Coming from an inner city, I've noticed time and time again that a zip code like mine is easy to overlook. It is support from people like those at NYISF that allow me to break the stereotype and achieve my fullest potential.”

Mora-Amaya is president of the St. John’s University chapter of the Association of Latino Professionals For America, the largest Latino association for business professionals and students. Noting the low numbers of Latina actuaries, she hopes that more will choose to enter the field, citing herself as an example.

“My biggest dream is to be able to show my fellow Latina youth that they too can be whatever they aspire to be,” she said. “Seeing more people like me in the workplace would truly be a dream come true.”

The New York Insurance Scholarship Foundation, Inc. (NYISF) is a public charity initiated by the property and casualty insurance industry that supports students studying the business of insurance in New York. The foundation is affiliated with the New York Insurance Association, Inc.
