From programs that help veterans transition to life on campus, to a television series covering pertinent religious and secular topics, St. John’s commitment to excellence is evident in the numerous accolades the University earned over the past year.
High Marks for Educating Veterans
St. John’s continues to earn recognition as a source of educational opportunity for those who serve in the nation’s military. This year, Victory Media named St. John’s a Top 10 Military Friendly® School Gold Award recipient. The Top 10 Gold Award is Victory Media’s highest honor, reserved for institutions that it terms “the best of the best” in providing resources for veterans.
Military Advanced Education & Transition (MAE&T) rated St. John’s as a “Top School” in their 2017 Guide to Colleges and Universities. In its assessment, MAE&T highlighted the work of the University’s Veterans Success Center, along with the institution’s ability to help student veterans transition from military service to campus life.
This past spring, 404 veterans were enrolled at St. John’s. When the Veterans Success Center opened on February 5, 2015, the University had 209 student veterans. Located in Marillac Hall on the Queens campus, the center includes a lounge and meeting spaces where veterans receive mentoring, career advisement, research assistance, and other services.
“We’re grateful to be able to give back to our veteran students—who have given so much in service to our country—by providing critical resources to them,” said Mary H. Pelkowski, Associate Dean for Student Engagement, who serves as an advisor to St. John’s student veterans and helped establish the Veterans Success Center.
Top Honors for Actuarial Science Program
The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) honored the School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science (SRM) with its 2017 University Award.
SRM, a division of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, was selected by CAS for its success at incorporating property and casualty insurance into the curriculum, in addition to its innovative risk management program and industry engagement.
“We are proud to be among the top-rated actuarial science programs in the United States,” said Norean R. Sharpe, Ph.D., Dean, Joseph H. and Maria C. Schwartz Chair, and Professor of Decision Sciences at The Peter J. Tobin College of Business. “This award illustrates the quality of our actuarial science curriculum and faculty at St. John’s.”
St. John’s will be recognized at the CAS Annual Meeting in Austin, TX, in November.
