Queens, NY, April 12—In a new national ranking, St. John’s University’s Tobin College of Business’ degree in Risk Management and Insurance earned second place among the 15 best undergraduate programs in the field.
The survey, “15 Best Bachelor of Insurance and Risk Management Degree Programs 2017–18,” evaluated institutions that offer degrees specifically in the discipline. There are nearly 70 colleges and universities in the nation with related programs or concentrations. The ranking was conducted by the website Online Accounting Degree Programs, a leading Internet resource for business students.
“This recognition for our Risk Management and Insurance program further validates the strength of our faculty and curriculum,” said Norean R. Sharpe, Ph.D., Dean of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John’s. “Our faculty rank among the top scholars in this discipline worldwide.”
Drawing on resources, such as College Navigator and the International Risk Management Institute, the ranking considered six “metrics” when evaluating programs: whether there was a “dedicated” Risk Management department; available specializations; advanced offerings attracting graduate students; productivity (degrees conferred in a given year); a chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma (the international Risk Management fraternity); and actuarial excellence (designated by the Society of Actuaries).
St. John’s program excelled in all the criteria. The ranking praised its Quantitative Risk and Insurance (QRI) track and its emphasis on international education. According to the website, the University “provides one of the best insurance and risk management studies programs for globally minded students.” The “cosmopolitan vibe” of its New York City location also earned recognition.
The School of Risk Management (SRM) in the Tobin College of Business is based at St. John’s Manhattan campus and is a global leader in risk and insurance education. Founded in 1901 as the Insurance Society of New York, It became The College of Insurance (TCI) and merged with St. John’s in June 2001. The Peter J. Tobin College of Business is accredited by AACSB – International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and SRM is recognized by the Society of Actuaries as a Center of Actuarial Excellence – an honor held by only 17 programs in the U.S.
