Annual Career Fair Attracts Scores of Students and Alumni

Carrying his résumé, and eager to make professional connections, Peter Del Re ’17MBA joined nearly 1,200 St. John’s students and recent alumni at St. John’s University’s annual Fall Career and Internship Fair. Corporate recruiters came to the Queens campus to meet students excited to take their next step toward a bright future. “This is a great way to make connections, and St. John’s has some of the best connections in New York City,” Peter observed.

The Fair, sponsored by University Career Services, brought representatives from more than 125 companies and organizations to the Taffner Field House on September 29. The prospective employers were on hand to interview students and alumni for a variety of employment and internship opportunities.

“We were excited with the level of participation we received from prospective employers,” said Paulette Gonzalez, the office’s Senior Director of Employment Services. “Some of these employers have been to campus consistently over the years, but we’re happy to welcome new organizations that are attracted by our students’ strong academic background, great work ethic, and ability to succeed in a diverse and global environment.”

 University Career Services organized the event with assistance from each of the University’s schools and colleges. Employers ranged from top financial corporations like Northwestern Mutual and Prudential to governmental organizations, like the New York City Department of Investigation.

Many nonprofit organizations also came to St. John’s to meet with students interested in spending time doing service after graduation, including the Peace Corps, Teach for America, and the Vincentian Mission Corps.

Students who attended viewed the event as further proof of the University’s commitment to them. LaQuan Martinez ’16CPS agreed. “An event like this shows that St. John’s has the resources to help their students get the job that they want after graduation,” he said. “There are so many organizations here.”

For many students, though, the fair was a great way to connect with prospective employers while still in school. “I’m here to meet people who can help me take that next step, one that hopefully leads to a great job,” said Anoosha Hamid ’20TCB. She added, “I have friends in other schools that don’t enjoy the same opportunities offered to us at St. John’s.”
