- "Voices from the Margins: South Asian Immigrants in New York,” Panel discussion with Shahla Hussain, Ph.D.
The Institute for Critical Race and Ethnic Studies (CRES)’ Community Research Partnership (CRP) program will present a virtual panel discussion, “Voices from the Margins: South Asian Immigrants in New York,” on Wednesday, April 26, from 1 to 2 p.m. EST via Zoom. Registration is required.
The panel will include Shahla Hussain, Ph.D., Associate Professor, South Asian History, St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Her research interests include themes of decolonization, colonialism, identity, and migrations. Dr. Hussain’s book, Kashmir in the Aftermath of Partition, is published by Cambridge University Press (2021). She is the first recipient of the institute’s CRP grant. Her CRP research investigates the intersection of class, race, immigration, and legal status in defining the social and economic status of low-wage immigrants from South Asia living on the margins of New York City.
Dr. Hussain will be joined by two panelists from the Nepali community organization Adhikaar. Development and Research Manager Aakriti Khanal is a proud daughter of immigrants who immigrated to the US from Nepal at the age of 11. She has spent the past decade working at organizations that empower women, workers of color, and the Nepali-speaking immigrant community.
Maya Gurung is Adhikaar’s Senior Case Coordinator. She was born and raised in Nepal and came to the United States as an international student in 2011. Ms. Gurung manages the casework program for issues ranging from immigration (TPS), wage theft, fraud, labor trafficking, housing, city services, and others.
The panel will be moderated by Manouchkathe Cassagnol, Pharm.D., BCPS, AACC, Executive Director, Academic Center for Equity and Inclusion, and Clinical Professor, Department of Clinical Health Professions, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
