Vincentian Center for Church and Society Biennial Poverty Conference
Saturday, November 16
10 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
D’Angelo Center Ballroom
Our Biennial Poverty Conference, “Poverty: Multidimensional Problem; Charity: Multidimensional Solution,” considers the many ways in which poverty needs to be measured in order to offer solutions.
The conference involves a collaboration of the Vincentian Center for Church and Society and Catholic Charities Brooklyn & Queens. We will welcome Sabina Alkire, D.Phil, our 2024–25 Vincentian Chair of Social Justice, as the keynote speaker for the morning session. She earned a D.Phil in Economics from the University of Oxford. Currently, she is a Professor of Poverty and Human Development and directs the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative at the University of Oxford.
Following Dr. Alkire’s presentation, a panel of St. John’s University faculty representing several of our Schools and Colleges will discuss the effects of poverty on marginalized populations from the perspective of their discipline.
The 125th Anniversary Symposium of Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens will comprise our afternoon session. His Eminence Cardinal Christophe Pierre (the Apostolic Nuncio in the United States) will deliver the keynote. Cardinal Pierre will speak on “Walking with the Poor, Walking with God.” Following this lecture, three breakout sessions entitled “Where Have We Been? Where are We Going?” will focus on housing, food, and mental health.
All students, faculty, administrators, and staff, as well as the general public, are invited to attend.
