The Department of Public Safety received a complaint on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at 5:35 p.m., concerning the theft of a cell phone from a student while on campus in the vicinity of Gate 6.
The student reported her cell phone was taken from her hand forcefully; the male who snatched it refused to give it back. The male fled the location after throwing the phone onto the ground, causing it to be damaged.
The Department of Public Safety conducted an investigation and identified the person responsible. The New York City Police Department responded and classified the incident as a robbery.
On Wednesday, May 8, the person responsible was arrested by the New York City Police Department.
Public Safety reminds the University community to always be aware of their surroundings. If you are approached by someone who demands property from you, comply with their demands and then immediately notify 911 and Public Safety at 718-990-5252 as soon as possible. Similarly, if you observe any type of suspicious activity, immediately notify 911 and Public Safety.
