- Lenten Reflections 2020: Day 33
Name: Jeanne Carroll
Title: Alumna, Class of 1970
Scripture of the Day: EZ 37: 12-14; ROM 8: 8-11; JN 11: 1-45
“I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
Today’s scripture readings are filled with the Lord’s promise of mercy and the fullness of redemption. When we trust in the Lord, the spirit of God dwells in us and we walk in God’s light. Before raising Lazarus from the dead, Jesus says to Martha, “Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?”
Dear Jesus, we thank you for all of the blessings in our life and the gift of faith. Your presence and the promise of eternal life with you, sustains and comforts us during the challenges that life brings.
Even though I trust in you Lord, it is sometimes hard for me to face the loss of a loved one or watch as an illness ravages the life of one I hold dear. I, like so many members of our University community, grieve and have feelings of emptiness and helplessness. At these times, remind us that you also mourned and wept at the death of Lazarus, and in your humanity, identified with mankind. May we follow your example of bringing comfort to Martha and Mary, by compassion and through acts of kindness to others, especially to those most in need.
