I never thought that during my college years I would strengthen my faith. After going on two service trips, Give Kids the World and the Niagara Plunge, and two Journey for Justice trips in El Paso and Alabama, I truly realized how much I need God in my life.
The experiences were very emotional. There were moments when I had no idea how to feel, and then moments when I felt sad and helpless. Psalms 46:1-3 helped me through all of them. The first two verses say, “God is our refuge and our strength, an ever-present help in distress. Therefore we fear not, though the earth be shaken and mountains plunge into the depths of the sea.”
I remember my dad reading this when I was younger, so these verses have always been in my head. When I was feeling sad and helpless, I prayed to God and told him how I was feeling. Once I was done praying, I felt comfort; this wasn’t any comfort, it was comfort from high above. I felt peace and happiness.
Now I often reflect on these verses. They uplift me and remind me that God is my strength, God is my refuge, and God is the only one who can make me feel at peace.
With God, I fear nothing. I fear nothing because I know who my God is and I know God will always be there for me.
