In her recent New York Times op-ed, “A Different Border Crisis Mirrors What’s Happening in the U.S.,” Princeton University professor Lorgia García Peña writes about last month’s closure of the Dominican Republic-Haiti by Dominican President Luis Abinader, the wider and longer anti-Haitian context within which this is occurring, and the ruling 10 years ago that at the time effectively rendered stateless an estimated 200,000 Dominicans of Haitian descent.
Please join us for a conversation with Ana María Belique, a Dominican activist of Haitian descent who is part of a grassroots and youth-led movement that has been fighting against denationalization and for citizenship and other human rights. Ms. Belique will discuss the situation for those who continue to be affected by the September 2013 ruling and the broader climate within which Dominicans of Haitian descent, Haitian migrants, and border-dwellers struggle. A moderated Q&A session follows with Raj Chetty, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Assistant Chair, Department of English, and food will be served.
