- Grand Alumni Homecoming Weekend and University Updates
We hope this message finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy. Please know that here at St. John’s, the members of the Vincentian community pray daily for you, the St. John’s community, our nation, and the world. We invite you to send any special intentions you may have to the Virtual Book of Prayer.
Grand Alumni Homecoming Weekend
Normally at this time of year, we would be preparing for St. John’s annual Grand Alumni Homecoming Weekend (GAHW). This extended weekend, originally scheduled for May 28–June 1, engages thousands of alumni and friends and is eagerly anticipated every year. But with so much uncertainty about the impact and scope of the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that we must make both short- and long-term decisions that are in the best interest of St. John’s and the broader community.
Therefore, it is our regret to inform you that out of a continued abundance of caution, the 2020 Grand Alumni Homecoming Weekend will not take place this year. We are especially mindful that many alumni would have celebrated significant graduation anniversaries, such as the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1970, the 40th anniversary of the Class of 1980, and the 25th anniversary of the Class of 1995. In the weeks ahead, we will explore ways to recognize those who would have celebrated special milestones and will share that information with you at an appropriate time.
Commencement
Earlier this week, President Conrado “Bobby” Gempesaw, Ph.D., informed the St. John’s community that because of COVID-19, the University will not be able to hold the Commencement Exercises in May as originally planned. We know that this was profoundly disappointing news for those who looked forward to Commencement. If you happen to know a St. John’s student who was preparing to celebrate his or her graduation, we hope you will take a moment to reach out and offer words of support and encouragement.
