Purpose
Sponsored by the Office of Grants and Sponsored Research (OGSR), the St. John’s University GraduateResearch Advancement in Science Scholarship Program(GRASSP) is designed to foster an institutional culture of sponsored research in science complimenting the needs of our academic community. To this end, the University has made available a limited number of funds for graduate students to actively engage in research/laboratory experience with a designated faculty member and to learn the basic tasks associated with sponsored research administration and compliance.
Amount of the Award
Individual awards in the amount of $3,000.00 will be granted to any one recipient.
Application Deadline: May 10, 2018 at 4:30 p.m.
Award Period: Fall Semester 2018, Spring Semester 2019
Responsibilities
- Each awardee will be assigned a designated faculty mentor within their major department in which they will engage in weekly experiential learning.
- Awardees will work under the supervision and direction of their faculty mentor and will exposed in the training, use and maintenance of university equipment and will be exposed to a laboratory environment and departmental facilities.
- Each awardee will be trained in the distinction between federal/state/private research grant applications.
- Each awardee will be trained in the use and comprehension of proposal solicitations, federal guidelines.
- Each awardee must attend the Grants office workshops in the fall 2018 semester.
- Each awardee will assist in research month preparation as well as present a research poster at student and faculty poster session in April 2019.
- Further job responsibilities will be defined by the faculty mentor.
Requirements
A university Graduate Student accepting support under this program must:
- Be accepted and enrolled in a graduate- level (Science) course of study by the time of acceptance of this award.
- Possess a minimum of a 3.5 GPA
- Applicants are restricted to the following St. John’s science departments:
- Biological Sciences
- Chemistry
- Communication Science & Disorders
- Mathematics & Computer Science
- Physics
- Psychology
- Clinical Health Professions
- Pharmaceutical Sciences
- Pharmacy Administration & Public Health
- Computer Sciences, Mathematics and Science (College of Professional Studies)
D). Students must demonstrate evidence of financial need through a written essay.
E). A minimum of 12 hours per week and maximum of 15 hours per week per semester.
- 2/3 of effort will be devoted to working with the faculty mentor.
- 1/3 of effort will be administrative duties.
F). An interim report will be due on the last day of the Fall semester (3 pages)
G). A final report is due on the last day of the spring semester (5 pages).
*Applications are open to current university undergraduate students who have been accepted into a graduate program starting August 30, 2018 (Fall semester).
Program Restrictions
*Current university Graduate Assistants (or those who have accepted a GA role effective Fall 2018) are not eligible to apply.
Please note that the Graduate Research Program is able to admit a limited number of new graduate majors in any given cycle. This is a competitive process. Not all students with a GPA of 3.5 who qualify and apply to the program are guaranteed admission.
Application Process
Each applicant must submit the formal Applicationfor Admission and a Personal Statement (alongside all supporting documentation) listed as follows:
Full applications packets consist of the following components:
- Application for Admission (bearing original signature and date)
- Personal Statement: A typed 500 word (maximum) essay addressing each of the following:
- Why did you choose to pursue your course of a science major?
- Why you choose St. John’s University to pursue your graduate degree?
- Do you feel that you demonstrate financial need? Explain/describe your situation.
- Define your research interests and areas of specialty.
- Define your post- graduate academic goals and career objectives.
- If you have a preferred faculty mentor, please explain choice of mentor.
- A Letter of Support from a university faculty member associated with your science major (bearing their original signature).
- Attach both undergraduate and graduatetranscripts from all institutions where you have completed college-level courses, including St. John’s (these may be official or unofficial copies)
- A current resume or CV.

List of Key Dates
- May 10, 2018: Deadline to submit the full application packet to the attention of the Office of Grants and Sponsored Research
- July 1, 2018: The selection committee will make the decision regarding the conferral of admission into the program and communicate it to the applicant.
