- Did you know that November is Native American Heritage Month?
In November, we honor the original inhabitants of North America, including the Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians. It is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions and histories, and recognize the important contributions of Native people. It is also an opportunity to educate ourselves about tribes, raise awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced historically and in the present, and acknowledge the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.
The University’s Employee Assistance Program provides ways to celebrate native American heritage month (PDF) and information about how and where to seek culturally competent indigenous mental health care (PDF). The University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs has events scheduled this month that employees are welcome and encouraged to participate in.
For even more information, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) website has a page dedicated to important identity and cultural dimensions that influence Indigenous mental health and mental health care.
Our New York campus locations occupy the ancestral lands of the Matinecock, Rockaway, Lenape and Canarsie Peoples. To learn more about the lands you occupy when home or traveling, visit https://native-land.ca/. We encourage you to take a moment to discover something new.
