- 12th Biennial Poverty Conference
Almost three years later, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to make global headlines. We continue to reflect on and analyze our response to it as individuals and as a nation.
Healing and ministry to the sick were some of the earliest expressions of the Vincentian charism. Much information has been gathered in our era, but what has been learned regarding care and who suffers most deeply?
The theme of our 12th Biennial Poverty Conference is “Pandemic and Poverty.” This conference involves a collaboration between the Vincentian Center for Church and Society and the Faculty Research Consortium of the Vincentian Institute for Social Action. Using this theme, we consider the ways in which underserved populations experienced added marginalization due to the pandemic.
As the keynote speaker for the conference, we welcome Dave A. Chokshi, M.D., the 43rd Health Commissioner of New York City and a physician at Bellevue Hospital. He is a familiar and trusted figure for New Yorkers.
Following Dr. Chokshi’s presentation, a panel of St. John’s University faculty drawn from our various Schools and Colleges will speak about the way in which marginalized populations have experienced the effects of the pandemic from the point of view of their discipline.
After the morning presentations, a poster session highlighting poverty and the need of the community will be offered.
This event is open to all students, faculty, administrators, and staff, as well as the general public.
Registration is required. For more information about the upcoming program, see the attached flyer (PDF).
