Veteran Alumnus Used Military Skills to Achieve Success at St. John’s
Michael Andrew Hall ’14CPS, ’15GCPS, enrolled in St. John’s University after serving his country for more than six years in the US Army, including combat deployments to Iraq, from 2006 to 2007, and to Afghanistan, from 2009 to 2010.
- Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Science
- MPS in Criminal Justice Leadership
- The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies
“As a combat engineer, my primary job was to ensure the roads in Afghanistan and Iraq were clear of any roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices,” Mr. Hall explained. “Being a sergeant in the US Army, I also was entrusted with the training and development of soldiers. I had to ensure I was a role model because my soldiers looked to me for direction, guidance, and purpose. It was very rewarding and honorable. I had to lead from the front to gain their trust.”
He continued, “My overall experience as a soldier allowed me to develop many life skills, such as communication, organization, and a no-quit attitude.”
Mr. Hall brought those skills with him when he completed his military service and enrolled at St. John’s to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice on the Queens, NY, campus from the University’s College of Professional Studies, now known as The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies. He also earned a Master of Professional Studies degree in Criminal Justice Leadership at the University.
Mr. Hall, who grew up in Queens, always wanted to attend St. John’s. “Once I learned that St. John’s has a program for veterans, I knew it was the right choice for me,” said Mr. Hall, who was a member of the St. John’s Veterans’ Club.
He pursued a career in law enforcement, and eventually became a detective with the Greenwich Police Department in Greenwich, CT. He credits St. John’s with providing networking opportunities that led to his current position.
“St. John’s is an amazing school,” said Mr. Hall. “I would advise any St. John’s student to access the University’s vast alumni network—many of whom are in upper management positions in different career fields—who would be more than willing to extend a helping hand to guide them in reaching their professional goals.”
