Study Abroad Program Helps St. John’s Student Achieve a Global Education
Steiner Williams’s parents inspired a deep passion for travel that moved the Kansas native to apply to St. John’s for his undergraduate degree to participate in the University’s Study Abroad programs.
“If I did not receive this scholarship, it would not have been possible for me to attend St. John’s and receive an incredible education and countless opportunities.”
“When I was researching colleges to attend, I discovered that St. John’s had incredible study abroad opportunities. Finding out that I could potentially study in Ireland, France, and Italy sounded amazing to me, and it was a major reason why I chose St. John’s,” recalled Steiner, who was born and raised in Topeka, and will graduate in May 2025 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and a minor in Business Analytics from The Peter J. Tobin College of Business.
“Every year that I have been at St. John’s, I have the opportunity to travel. During my first year, I was able to partake in Global Passport and visit Rome for a week. My sophomore year, I studied abroad in Limerick, Ireland; Paris, France; and Rome, Italy, for a semester,” Steiner recalled. “In my junior year, I traveled to Cork, Ireland, for spring break as a part of the Thomas J. Cox, Jr. Honors Program. This year, I will travel to Vietnam for a fellowship trip. These trips have been crucial in shaping my world view and helped me to create a truly global education for myself.”
Steiner said he remains grateful for the St. Vincent de Paul Scholarship that St. John’s awarded him. “If I did not receive this scholarship, it would not have been possible for me to attend St. John’s and receive an incredible education and countless opportunities.”
The senior additionally credits St. John’s with helping him map a path to his future career as a business consultant and entrepreneur. “When I first came to St. John’s, I was not quite sure what I wanted to do,” he reflected.
Thanks to the guidance offered by Tracey L. Freiberg, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Economics and Finance, Tobin College, and Robert Beaudet, M.B.A., Director, Career Services for Tobin College, Steiner learned about the field of consulting, and they helped him figure out what he wanted in a career. He also learned about Protiviti, a California-based, global business consulting firm, where he interned this past summer. After he graduates, Steiner will join the staff at Protiviti as a full-time risk and compliance consultant.
As he takes on his new role at Protiviti, Steiner intends to continue pursuing his entrepreneurial goal of someday leading his own company. He will draw, in part, from the experience he gained during the summer after his first year of college, putting into practice what he learned in the classroom at St. John’s to create a detailing business that specialized in cars and airplanes, and which he operated for two years.
Steiner was inspired by Anthony M. Sabino, Esq. ’80CBA, ’83L, Professor, Department of Law, Tobin College, during his first year at St. John’s. “He taught me business law, and it was one of the most useful classes I took when I was looking to start my own business” he said.
Steiner is active in various student organizations at St. John’s. He is Vice President of Engagements for Consult Your Community, which provides a platform for students to pursue small business consulting. Steiner is also Vice President of St. John’s Alpha Psi Omega Upsilon Chi Chapter, which is the National Theatre Honors Society at the University.
“You can also often find me in The Little Theatre, building sets for the Chappell Players Theatre Group and Alpha Psi Omega,” he said. “There are many student organizations on campus; no matter what your interest is, you will find a group of people who share that same interest.”
Steiner added, “St. John’s provides amazing opportunities, communities, and connections. I am very happy I came here. I have met so many amazing people, and forged lifelong friendships and connections that I will never forget. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”
