Linda Loperuto Carter '72Ed

Recently honored by the Diocese of Rockville Centre for 25 years of teaching, Linda Loperuto Carter reflects on the beginnings of her educational career at St. John’s University.

In her own words: My days as a college student began at St. John’s University in September of 1968. It was soon to become my home away from home. In addition to study sessions and eating lunch, many wonderful friendships were formed. One of those friends became my husband and has been for the past 45 years. We were married in August of 1972, just two months after graduation, and moved to Brooklyn to begin our life together. I began my teaching career in St. James Cathedral School in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and remained there until transferring to Most Precious Blood in Brooklyn.

Upon the birth of my first child, I decided to put my passion for teaching aside and raise my family. In the years that followed, we moved back to Long Island and settled into our new home with our daughter and son. My yearning to teach became stronger and as soon as my youngest child went off to school, I returned to teaching.

Since St. John’s had instilled such Christian values in me, I chose to return to teach in a Catholic school. I taught art at Our Lady of Mercy School in Hicksville, NY, until the birth of my third child. Once again I chose to stay home and raise my daughter. Upon her entering school, I once again returned to my wonderful profession, where I continue to use the faith-based ideals and knowledge I learned at St. John’s University.

I was honored by the Diocese of Rockville Centre this November for 25 years of teaching. My journey which began at St. John’s prepared the way to bring me to where I am today.
