Vincentian Business Professor Inspires Students  

Larry Boone, Ph.D., and Associate Professor of Management says that teaching at St. John’s University has allowed him to achieve professional fulfillment while enabling him “to integrate my interest in business management with my commitment to Vincentian service.” 

Appointed to the Peter J. Tobin College of Business (TCB) faculty in 1987 after a distinguished career in industry, Dr. Boone has chalked up an impressive array of achievements during his 23 years here.

In 2006, he became Director of TCB’s acclaimed Executive-in-Residence Program (EIRP). Created in 1977 to provide outstanding undergraduate and graduate business students with coveted opportunities to gain real-life consulting experience with corporations, the program has doubled its size under Dr. Boone.

In addition, EIRP participants have steadily earned a reputation for hard work and for producing creative, solution-based strategies. As proof of this, Dr. Boone reports that “More and more senior managers are requesting our students’ input.”

Under Dr. Boone’s leadership, EIRP’s mandate has been expanded to include consulting for not-for-profit organizations. The recipient of the Vincentian Mission Award in 2009, he states, “I’m always looking for ways to connect EIRP’s services  withservices with the University’s Vincentian mission.” EIRP’s recent roster of clients includes Goldman Sachs, Ridgewood Savings Bank, Pfizer, the Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), Goodwill Industries and United Cerebral Palsy, Suffolk County.

 In 2006, EIRP was exported to the Rome campus, ensuring that TCB graduate students in Italy also have access to comparable hands-on consulting opportunities. These students work with local Italian organizations and U.S. multinationals with overseas offices.

Reflecting his dedication to preparing students to think analytically and critically and to improving their written communication skills, Dr. Boone has helped the TCB Alumni Office institute an annual Business Plan Competition, The contest, judged by prominent alumni entrepreneurs, awards cash prizes based on the feasibility, thoroughness and creativity of student submitted business plans. Prizes range from $2,000 to $6,000 and are made possible by James W. Christmas’70 CBA.
 
For the past three years, Dr. Boone has made time to teach leadership and management skills to aspiring deacons at the Rockville Center Diocese’s Seminary. He also has taken part in New Pastor Management and International Priest Acculturation training for more than 15 years. In addition, he is one of the writers of The Vincentian Center for Church and Society’s book, A Concise Guide to Catholic Church Management, recently published by Ave Maria Press.

By showing that business interests can be combined with Vincentian activities, Dr. Boone is an inspirational role model for his students. They cite his professionalism, initiative and strong sense of ethics.

“Dr. Boone has helped mold me into an entrepreneurial  selfentrepreneurial self-starter,” said Sanya Makhani ‘10TCB, ‘12TCB — a past EIRP participant who is now Dr. Boone’s graduate assistant. “He has given me the confidence to approach business issues with enthusiasm and passion.” She added, “I hope some day to be able to use everything I’ve learned from him and make him proud.”
