John Marchi ’13TCB

When John Marchi ’13TCB launched his college career, he had no doubt that he would honor the legacy of his family by becoming a third-generation Johnny.
“St. John’s has been a household name for decades in the Marchi family. The Red Storm runs in my bloodline,” said Mr. Marchi, of Staten Island, NY, who graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from The Peter J. Tobin College of Business. Mr. Marchi is currently Vice President, Capital Markets, at Credit Suisse, a leading financial services company headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland.
Mr. Marchi’s great uncle, John J. Marchi ’49L, ’71HON, the late New York State Senator who represented Staten Island for 50 years, was the first of eight family members to graduate from St. John’s. He was followed by Louis J. Marchi ’70L, Mr. Marchi’s father. The University then drew Mr. Marchi’s two uncles, two sisters, and one cousin in their quest to become Johnnies.
Mr. Marchi’s commitment to attend St. John’s was further cemented with what he called an “amazing” opportunity that stemmed from a scholarship he received from the Father Dorr Golf Classic Scholarship Fund, named for Rev. James F. Dorr, C.M. ’79GEd, chief organizer and fundraiser for the golf event and scholarship.
“The financial aid St. John’s offered, when I compared it to other private institutions, was night and day,” Mr. Marchi said. “To this day, I am extremely grateful for the opportunity afforded to me by the generosity of others.”
Mr. Marchi repays the generosity of his alma mater through volunteer efforts that most recently included serving on the 150th Anniversary Task Force, charged with planning the University’s year-long sesquicentennial birthday, which is currently taking place. “I was proud to be part of a group of staff and alumni who shared an equal passion for the rich history of St. John’s,” he said. “We have been able to celebrate throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in a way we never imagined, and our planning committee meetings provided a sense of normalcy for me at the height of this health crisis.”
Mr. Marchi considers his work as a volunteer coordinator for the University’s Relay For Life, an annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, as a highlight of his undergraduate years. “I saw the importance of fundraising and giving back through planning that event.”
That kind of experience underscores his belief that, “St. John’s is not just a college; it’s a family and a community you can enjoy for years after walking across the Commencement stage on the Great Lawn.”
"You never really leave St. John’s,” Mr. Marchi added. “Over the last eight years since I graduated, I have never felt like my St. John’s story ended. Instead, my time at St. John’s was a prologue and the best times as an alumnus are yet to come.”
