Andrei Crapcenco ’19TCB knows the value of success—both in the classroom and on the tennis court. He also knows that it takes hard work, dedication, and the assistance of others to turn a dream into reality.

A member of the St. John’s University men’s tennis team with a 3.75 grade point average, Andrei was recently honored with the BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award, which recognizes student athletes for their athletic achievements, academic excellence, and commitment to community service.

“I am from Romania, and when I was considering where to go to college, I knew that I wanted to come to America and stay on the East Coast,” he said. “I wanted to enroll at a university where I could excel both academically and athletically—St. John’s was the perfect place for me.”

He was accepted into St. John’s five-year program in The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, majoring in Finance and Business Analytics. He earned his undergraduate degree this past May, and will earn his M.B.A. in 2020. He is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society and was also inducted into the Theta Chapter Omicron Delta Epsilon International Honor Society for Economics this year. He has already been offered a position in the financial field when his education is complete.

“St. John’s has made such a difference for me,” he acknowledged. “The education that I have received, and am still receiving, is excellent. I know that I will be well prepared to succeed in my career after I earn my graduate degree. And, it is wonderful to be able to play the sport I love on such a highly regarded Red Storm team.”

This past May, the four-year tennis star was awarded the Frank C. Haggerty Award, which is given to the most outstanding male student-athlete representing St. John's University. He was also named the winner of the George Seewagen Memorial Award, which is given to the most valuable player on the St. John’s men’s tennis team.

A recipient of both an academic and athletic scholarships, Andrei is grateful to the donors whose generous support of the University provides much-needed financial assistance to the young men and women who entrust their education to St. John’s. “I am very impressed by how the alumni love their alma mater and are always there to offer help to today’s students,” he said. “Giving back is important to me. Once I am successful, I plan to do the exact same thing.”
