A Week in the Life of a Public Relations Major in NYC

In this blog, I take you through a typical week as a public relations major, from classroom learning to networking events, internships, and campus involvement. If you’re curious about what it’s like to study public relations and build a future in the field, this is your inside look!
Navigating college while preparing for a career in public relations can feel like a juggling act. As a senior majoring in public relations (PR) at St. John’s University, I’ve learned how to balance academics with hands-on career experiences—and I’m here to share what that looks like.
Monday: A Busy Day of PR Classes, Work-Study, and Fashion Club Leadership
My Mondays tend to be the most hectic. I start my day by finding an outfit I feel good in. I like to think, “If I look good, I feel good.”
I head to my two back-to-back classes: my Advertising Portfolio class at 10:40 a.m. and my Seminar Public Relations Campaign course at 12:05 p.m. Both hands-on courses provide me with knowledge and experience I can take with me throughout my postcollege life.
After classes, I grab lunch at my favorite spot in Marillac, Pico Mesa, before leading my weekly Red House Fashion Club meetings as the club president. This semester, we have been putting in extensive work for our annual fashion show, which we hold every spring.
Next, I start my work-study shift as a content writer for Johnnie’s Blog. Writing content at the University has been an excellent way for me to share my experience as a college student and gain some new skills along the way.
Once I have completed the essentials, I end with a Pilates class at the gym and a nice, balanced dinner.
Tuesday: PR Experience Through my Editorial Internship
My Tuesday schedule is one of my favorites during the week. I have my remote internship with The Daily Front Row from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. As the internship is remote, I use it to reset and prepare more for the upcoming week.
My internship consists of researching any new fashion-related news pieces and writing on the pieces I am assigned. I love this internship because I not only practice writing for a magazine, but also learn much fashion-related news.
Some nights after my internship, I will go into the city to attend fashion-related events. These events include press previews of collections, cocktail parties celebrating the launch of a product or clothing line, and my favorite—fashion shows!
Wednesday: PR Classes, Blog Writing, and Unwinding with Mental Health Activities
Thankfully, Wednesdays are relaxing days for me. I have my Seminar in Communication Research from 10:40 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. We are learning about research, writing our qualitative research essays, and constructing surveys.
After this class, I like to grab a quick lunch from the Marillac cafeteria and eat before I start working on any revisions needed for my current Johnnies blog assignment. Additionally, with the preparations for the Red House Fashion Show underway, we hold brief weekly meetings every Wednesday to ensure the show stays on track and to ask any questions we might have. Once all of that is finished, I work on completing any upcoming homework assignments, then finish the day with a mental health activity like a nice midweek workout.
Thursday: Coffee, PR Classes, and Content Creation
Ah, yes, Thursdays—we’re almost there! To give myself a bit of extra motivation to make it to the end of the week, I love to make myself an iced coffee to drink during my classes; my favorite combo is the unsweetened STōK Cold Brew mixed with a dairy-free brown sugar creamer.
First, I attend my two public relations classes, after which I tend to grab a quick lunch before I work on my Johnnies blog assignment. After I finish all my responsibilities, I head to a quick Pilates class on campus with a few of my friends. This semester, I’ve tried to prioritize consistent exercise in my daily routine.
Finally, I get dinner at Montgoris Dining Hall and return to my dorm to relax for the rest of the night.
Friday: Fashion PR Internship and Weekend Preparation
We finally made it to Friday! I love to start my morning by researching fashion news and sending it to my internship director to get my intern assignments for the day. I make it a routine to end the week by grabbing my favorite everything bagel, caramel cream, and cold brew from Einstein’s Bagels on campus. I always love to reward myself with something for making it through another hectic week.
Once I receive my news assignments, I complete them efficiently by gathering the most information about the topic and adding my insights. I use my Fridays to tackle any end-of-the-week cleaning or chores I need to finish, ensuring extra relaxation during the weekend. The rest of the day is open for anything, whether hanging out with friends in the city, enjoying dinner, or having a calm movie night.
