How Work-Study Can Launch Your Career: A Student’s Perspective
Have you ever wondered how to gain valuable work experience, earn money, and build connections—all while keeping up with your studies? Work-study programs provide the ideal way to balance these priorities and make the most of your college experience.
My name is Madison Coombs, and I’m a senior at St. John’s University. Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of participating in the University’s work-study program, and it’s been a journey full of growth, challenges, and lessons. In this blog, I share my work-study story—highlighting how it has shaped me as a student and an aspiring public relations (PR) professional.
What is Work-Study?
Work-Study is a federally funded program that provides part-time job opportunities for you to help pay for your education. It allows you to earn money while gaining valuable work experience. The jobs can be on campus or with approved off-campus employers, often related to your field of study. Work-study positions typically offer flexible hours that accommodate class schedules, making it easier for you to balance work and academic commitments.
Why I Explored Work-Study Opportunities
I always knew I wanted to work during college, but the thought of searching for off-campus jobs and managing transportation felt overwhelming. St. John’s University’s federal work-study program offered the perfect solution: on-campus roles that were not only accessible, but also fit seamlessly into my class schedule.
The variety of positions available made work-study even more appealing—many are designed to align with specific majors. As a student earning a degree in public relations, I found opportunities that matched my career aspirations, allowing me to gain hands-on experience while earning money.
My Work-Study Role as a Digital Content Writer
Through the university's work-study program, I have had the incredible opportunity to become a digital content writer for the St. John’s University Johnnies blog. In this role, I create content that engages current and prospective students, including blog posts and social media content.
Here are just a few of the many skills I sharpen through this role:
- Content Creation: I craft engaging articles and posts, focusing on tone, structure, and purpose.
- Creative Writing: I flex my creativity, whether drafting captivating blog intros or storyboarding an Instagram video.
- Time Management: Balancing deadlines for writing projects with my academic responsibilities helps me prioritize effectively.
- Team Collaboration: Working closely with a supervisor and other students strengthens my communication and teamwork abilities.
A Day in My Life as a Student Worker
Here’s a look at my typical Tuesday schedule, balancing my work-study position as a digital writer and my classes as a public relations student:
10:40 a.m.–12:05 p.m.: Public Relations Writing Class
My day starts with a class that sharpens my PR writing skills, teaching me how to craft press releases, media pitches, and other essential materials.
12:05–12:25 p.m.: Quick Lunch Break
After class, I grab a quick lunch from the campus café or pack something light from home to refuel before my work shift.
12:30–4:30 p.m.: Work-Study Shift (Content Writing)
During my shift, I dive into assignments like brainstorming blog ideas, drafting content, or editing social media posts. Some days involve collaborating with peers or gathering supervisor feedback to ensure the final product meets University standards.
4:30–4:45 p.m.: Snack and Unwind
After my shift, I take a short break to enjoy a healthy snack (usually a granola bar or fruit) and decompress before heading to my next class.
5–7:50 p.m.: Public Relations Strategies Class
The day ends with an evening class focused on strategic PR planning and campaign development, helping me better understand my field.
Navigating Challenges: Balancing Academics and Work
One of the biggest hurdles I face as a student worker is managing my time, especially during midterms and finals. Balancing homework, studying, and work hours sometimes feels overwhelming. On days when my responsibilities clash, I struggle to stay on top of everything.
Finding the right balance between school and work took me some time; however, these practical tips make a significant difference:
- Using a Planner: My planner became a lifeline for keeping track of work shifts, class assignments, and deadlines. It helps me prioritize tasks and avoid last-minute scrambles.
- Setting Study Times: I habitually block out specific times for studying and completing homework. This ensures I stay on track without letting work interfere with academics.
- Knowing My Limits: Understanding that school comes first allows me to set realistic expectations.
My Favorite Part of Being a Student Writer
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role as a digital writer is seeing my work published and being able to share it on my LinkedIn profile. Knowing that my writing helps students connect with the University makes every effort worthwhile. The recognition and encouragement from my supervisor for my creativity and dedication are equally rewarding, further inspiring me to excel in my work.

How the Work-Study Program Prepares Me for a Career in Public Relations
My work-study role as a digital writer has been a meaningful steppingstone into my career, helping me grow personally and professionally. One of the most significant impacts of this role has been the confidence it has given me to take on leadership opportunities. As the President of the St. John’s University Red House Fashion Club, I now lead initiatives, mentor members, and organize events with a sense of purpose and strategy.
My experience ignited my passion for creative writing and positioned me to stand out in competitive internship applications. Recently, I was thrilled to accept an editorial internship at The Daily Front Row, an established publication in fashion journalism.
Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for how my time as a digital writer has laid the groundwork for my future. Each opportunity I’ve taken has built upon the lessons learned in this role, and I look forward to continuing to grow and succeed in my career.
