The First-Generation Student Advantage: What Sets You Apart?
What does being the first in your family to attend college mean? For many, it’s about breaking barriers and stepping into new opportunities. First-generation college students, especially those studying outside of their home country, bring unique strengths and perspectives that make their journeys one of a kind.
In this blog, we explore what it means to be an international, first-generation student and hear directly from those leading the way, sharing their experiences and the advantages they’ve discovered.
What Does First-Generation College Student Mean?
A first-generation college student is the first in their family to attend college. This often means their parents or guardians did not earn a four-year degree. If that describes you, you’re breaking new ground, facing challenges head-on, and showing what’s possible for your family and others who follow.
The Unique Edge You Bring as a First-Gen Student
Whether it’s figuring out how to live independently in a new country, manage classes, or find your tribe in a new environment, you have the skills to adjust and thrive.
Adaptability
College throws a lot of new stuff at you, but you’ve already proven you can overcome any obstacle. Whether it’s figuring out how to live independently in a new country, manage classes, or find your tribe in a new environment, you have the skills to adjust and thrive.
Hard Work
You’ve worked hard to get here, and that hustle is what will carry you through. Tough classes? Big goals? No problem. You’re the kind of person who makes things happen, and people—like professors and future employers—will see that.
Leadership
You’ve already made a bold move by being the first in your family to attend college, making you a leader. You’re showing others what’s possible and paving the way for more first-generation students like you. This same drive can help you shine in clubs, internships, and group projects on campus.
How Your Strengths Set You up for Success beyond College
The qualities you develop as a first-generation student not only help you succeed in school; they also help you stand out when applying for jobs, internships, and leadership roles. Many first-generation students use their experiences to create bright futures and inspire others along the way.
The Story of a First-Generation Latinx Student
For example, take the story of Emely Almendariz, a Latinx St. John’s University student pursuing a degree in Hospitality Management. Her adaptability and determination helped her navigate unfamiliar territory, build industry connections, and take on leadership roles. Since attending St. John’s, Emely has gained meaningful experience through relevant career experience, such as studying abroad.
Reflecting on her journey, she shares:
“My time at St. John’s has taught me the importance of adaptability and resilience, qualities I am confident will serve me well in navigating the opportunities and challenges ahead. As I aspire to expand my horizons internationally, I am excited by the prospect of making a meaningful impact across cultures and borders.”

Valeria Correa Benit: Going Beyond Limits
“‘I can’t’ doesn’t exist” became the motto for Valeria, who faced many struggles, including her father’s abandonment when she was just five years old. With limited English and big dreams, she arrived in the US determined to succeed. Despite a teacher’s discouragement, telling her that her dreams were too big, she used that moment to fuel her drive.
Reflecting on her journey, Valeria shares:
“Today, as I look back, I see a journey marked by determination and resilience. Despite the people who tried to discourage me, their skepticism became my driving force. I am proud to be a first-generation college student because my success is not only mine, but also my mother’s, who, by her example, taught me never to give up on my dreams. If anyone says you can’t achieve something, remember that ‘I can’t’ is an illusion. The power to change your destiny is in your hands, as it was in mine. Because when we decide not to give up, no dream is out of reach.”
Teodita Cabral: Embracing Identity
A proud daughter of a Guatemalan mother and Dominican father, Teodita has faced unique challenges on her journey to success. From a young age, she served as an interpreter for her mother, helping navigate everything from ordering food to making medical appointments. While initially resenting the responsibility, she now recognizes how it helped build her confidence and perseverance.
Reflecting on her journey, she shares:
“These experiences empowered me with valuable skills and solidified my confidence. They have taught me that, while pursuing education and facing challenges, perseverance and effort are what matter most. Being a first-generation student is both a blessing and a challenge, but I would not trade it for anything. I’m proud of who I am because I want to represent my culture positively wherever I go. Whether helping others or doing well in school, I want to represent my background somehow.”
Erick Lin: A Journey to Belonging
Being the oldest sibling in a Chinese immigrant family, the pressure to succeed fell heavily on his shoulders, compounded by the struggle to learn English and fit in. However, through determination, reading, and a commitment to improve, Erick passed his English as a Second Language (ESL) course and achieved academic success.
Reflecting on his journey, he shares:
“Passing ESL wasn’t just a personal accomplishment, but a turning point in my life. Although I may have started my life in ‘hard mode,’ I acquired skills and perspectives that have prepared me for any challenge life throws my way. What once felt like a cage of isolation has now become the bedrock of my success. It taught me that while language may pose a barrier, persistence and the will to learn will always provide the key to breaking that barrier.”
