August 27, 2008
A bright August day was the backdrop as St. John’s University
welcomed its incoming class of 2012 to the University with the New
Student Convocation of the 138th academic year and St. John's Fest.
During this year’s New Student Convocation and St. John's Fest,
held at the University’s Staten Island and Queens campuses on
August 26, 2008, students met their deans, academic advisors and
faculty members and were given advice on how to make the most of
their time here at St. John’s.

“St. John’s is now your University” declared College of
Professional Studies Dean
Kathleen Vouté MacDonald. Students were reminded to take full
advantage of the many resources, both academic and social, that the
University has to offer. “Get involved on campus and become part of
the University community. Conscious participation here will lead
you to active participation in the world, so start here,” advised
Student Council President for St. John’s Staten Island Campus Juan
Carlos Payero.
Students were also advised to get involved in some of this
year’s exciting programs and initiatives including Participate in ’08,
Learning Communities
and Global
Studies. Z-100 radio disc jockey and St. John’s alumna,
Danielle Monaro ’95SVC left the new students with a few words of
advice, “Balance your social life with your academic life, intern
at a company in your field and more importantly, enjoy your next
four years here!”
The convocation at the Queens campus ended with a procession to
the Great Lawn where students enjoyed fun games and activities at
the St. John's Fest. At the St. John's Fest, music blasted as
students danced, ate lunch on the lawn, played dodge ball and
practiced rock climbing. Several clubs and organizations were
in attendance to welcome the freshmen to the University and
encourage them to get involved in St. John’s campus life. Also, in
celebration of the first common hour, on August 28, the Staten
Island campus hosts a Freshman Barbecue on its Great
Lawn.
“St. John’s has been very welcoming. It’s great to be a part of
the St. John’s community” said Kimberley Pilling, future
physician’s assistant major.
