Understanding St. John’s Central (Campus
Pipeline)
- St. John’s Central is a portal or gateway for
connecting SJU’s web services together. With a single
sign-on, you can access your email account, Web for Employees, Web
for Students, Web for Faculty or Web for Alumni.
- St. John’s Central is not “Courseware”. It uses
WebCT for delivering full-featured Courseware functionally.
- Even though St. John’s Central is not a full fledge
Courseware package, it has some value to offer those not currently
using WebCT.
Message Boards
Can be a great way to stimulate classroom discussions.
Students can post questions or comments here about the course
work. Hopefully, their post will spark further discussions
online with others in their class.
Calendar
Usedvto post the dates for important class events, such as
midterms, finals, project due dates, class cancellations or field
trips.
Course Chat
Some students might be more likely to use chat than to
visit during office hours. If office hours are not able to
accommodate some students, consider using “chat”.
Class E-Mail
Each class has a student list you can use for emailing
individual students or the entire class.
Understanding St. John’s WebCT
Software:
- WebCT software can be used to create entire courses online or
to complement a classroom-based course.
- WebCT software resides on a server, allowing you and your
students to access it via a Web browser, such as Microsoft Internet
Explorer or Netscape.
- It also allows you to make changes to your course readily—from
any Web-accessible location—and to make these changes available to
your students immediately.
Use WebCT to
- Provide course materials that include text, complex equations,
images, video, and audio
- Evaluate students with quizzes and assignments
- Facilitate learning using searchable indexes, glossaries, and
image databases.
- Integrate Web resources into your courses
- Communicate with students via discussions, email, real-time
chat sessions, and an interactive whiteboard
- Manage grades
- Supply student feedback via an online grade book, self-tests,
and progress tracking
- Obtain data that allows you to analyze the effectiveness of
your course
