St. John’s University will celebrate Women’s History Month with
a line-up of events scheduled on the Queens and Staten Island
campuses throughout March.
The Queens campus’ theme: "Women’s Art: Women’s
Vision," includes a series of distinguished speakers who will
cover topics ranging from violence against women to empowering
career and personal advice. Guest lecturers include
Temma Kaplan, Author; Patti Ramey, Educator; Candace Corlett
‘67CBA, President and Chief Operating Officer of WSL Strategic
Retail, Co-chair of Network of Executive Women (New York region);
and Brent Scarpo, Motivational Speaker, who will share his unique
perspectives on women’s issues at a lecture on March 27.
The celebration in Queens concludes on April 1 with the
“Blessing of Women Ceremony” and the “Women of Distinction
Dinner.” Clover Hall, Ed.D., Vice President of Institutional
Research & Academic Planning at St. John’s will serve as the
guest speaker, honoring those women who have dedicated themselves
to their work.
St. John’s University’s Staten Island campus will honor Women’s
History Month with a series of events connected to its theme of
“We Are Strong, We Are Leaders, We Are Women.”
A multi-generational panel made up of students, faculty and
professionals will discuss women’s joys and concerns, James Weiss
will tell the stories of the women who have helped to change the
history of New York, and students will share their experiences as
women through poetry, song, and spoken word. An awards
ceremony will honor “Women of Achievement” from St. John’s Staten
Island campus community.
The final event on Staten Island, the Second Annual Women’s
Workshop, scheduled for March 30, includes an introduction to
self-defense, guided mediation and other ways to renew your mind
and body.

“Naming the Violence, Reversing the Shame: Female Activists and
Truth Commission in Latin America and South Africa”
The division of Student Affairs, the History Department, and the
Women’s Studies Program host guest speaker Temma Kaplan.
Thursday March 13, U.C. Lounge, 12:15 p.m.
“Living like Mama D- Lessons in Community Service and
Leadership”
The Division of Student Affairs presents guest speaker Patti
Ramey. This program looks at the life of Mama D, who enriched
the lives of thousands of Los Angeles’ homeless and forgotten
through sheer determination and a single disability check. Through
the use of this powerful documentary, educational guide and
accompanying workshop, students will come to understand how the
power of one individual can make a difference in the world.

“Career Conversations: Empowering Women for Career and
Personal Success”

The Career Center presents guest speaker Candace Corlett, St.
John’s Alumna and COACH, who will facilitate conversations on ways
women can advance in their careers and be catalysts for success in
their personal lives. President and Chief Operating Officer
of WSL Strategic Retail, Co-chair of Network of Executive Women in
the NY region, and mother of 3, Candace will share tips and
strategies for turning ambition in to advancement. This
presentation will include practical advice on balancing work and
family for women at the college level and beyond.

“For Women Only”
The Division of Student Affairs presents guest speaker Brent
Scarpo. “For Women Only” is highly sought after and is the
long awaited program that looks at the challenges and issues women
face in a male dominated society as presented by a man. Brent
Scarpo has a unique perspective on the issues and challenges women
face in society and empowers women to make a unique introspection
of their lives. Brent has great admiration or women and their role
in society for he was raised by a single, divorced mother during a
time when it was not fashionable to be so.

“Women’s Appreciation Dinner”
This dinner is a celebration of women by the distinguished Brothers
of Alpha Phi alpha Fraternity, Inc. This evening, we will cater to
the needs of all our female attendees. Everything from serving them
food and drinks, to giving flowers, we will do everything to make
them feel appreciated.

“The Black and White Ball”
Haraya- Pan-African Students Association presents a lavishing
formal event that celebrates the contributions of student leaders,
administration, and outstanding organizations within the St. John’s
community.

“Women of Distinction Dinner”
UC Commons, 6 p.m.
Honoring the Women who have gone above and beyond their duties and
have made a difference in our society. There will be a ceremony to
bless these women at the St. Thomas Moore church. Following the
ceremony, a dinner will be held in honor of these women who have
dedicated themselves to their work. Clover Hall, Ed.D., Vice
President of Institutional Research & Academic Planning will
serve as guest speaker.
Staten Island
Thursday, March 6, 2008, Kelleher Center, Kiernan Suite,
12:15 p.m.
“Women’s Conversations Across the Generations”
A multi-generational panel of St. John’s women, students, faculty
and professional staff, will engage in a conversation about the
joys, questions, concerns that are common to all women. This
continues the tradition of biblical women of different generations
encouraging each other.

“Blessing of Women”
Join us in a celebration of prayer and reflection at our annual
Blessing of Women. Listen to the lives and stories of women who
have inspired many generations of women on this campus and
throughout history.

“Women’s Vision through the Arts”
Students are invited to share their own experiences of love, pain,
joy and sorrow through spoken word, song, poetry and more.

Suite
“Women of New York”
Presented by James Weiss and the Discover New York Office, this
exciting lecture will discuss the many women who have made names
for themselves throughout New York. Hear the stories of Susan B.
Anthony, Sojourner Truth and Typhoid Mary who have helped to change
the history of New York.
Wednesday, March 26, 2008, Kelleher Center, Kiernan
Suite, 7 p.m.
“Women of Achievement”
This ceremony honors the women of our campus who have inspired,
motivated and changed their communities and ours. Ceremony will be
followed by a dessert reception.
Sunday, March 30, 2008, Kelleher Center, 11
a.m.
“Women’s Workshop”
Students will be able to renew their mind, body and soul while
reflecting on the experiences of the month at our 2nd annual
Women’s Workshop. Workshop includes Intro to Self-Defense, guided
meditation and more. Spots are limited.
