As our population becomes increasingly diverse, with the
introduction of new languages and varieties of English [beyond
America and Great Britain] what is literacy is debated with more
scrutiny. Literacy affects all sorts of outcomes for society:
economic, political, judicial as well as academic. What levels are
necessary for us to function at full capacity as a society? What
barriers exist that prevent us from reaching all children and
adults? These scholars/researchers target some key issues in this
ongoing debate, as well as share their proposed solutions to
creating a literate and informed society for all our citizens.
