The three most frequently asked questions by students who
transfer from a community college are:
- What courses will transfer in my program of interest?
- How long will it take to graduate?
- How much will it cost?
The first is the primary reason for this document. The second
depends upon how many credits one takes during each semester, and
the final one depends upon how many semesters one takes to complete
the degree. A transfer student, with an A.A. or A.S, may finish his
or her degree in the time allotted by the major.
In order to help the transfer student with the process, St.
John’s University has prepared this Transfer Guide for the Bergen
Community College (Bergen) student. St. John’s College of Liberal
Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, and the College of
Professional Studies are prepared to accept students, if they have
successfully completed their community college degree
requirements. As per the Provost’s Policy, “transfer credits
applied to B.A. or B.S. degrees in the Peter J. Tobin College of
Business or Doctorate and B.S. degrees in the College of Pharmacy
and Allied Health Professions must have their academic record
evaluated to determine the courses applicable to a degree program
in these units.”
Where applicable, major courses and programs are matched
enabling the student to make an informed decision, as well as plan
his or her course of study. In general, physical education and
health classes are not accepted for credit. The Office of
Admissions is available to assist with questions pertaining to the
development of a plan.
The transfer student, who has excelled in the classroom, may
qualify for one of our generous scholarship programs.
Students with a G.P.A. of 2.5 or better are eligible for transfer
scholarships ranging from $4,000 to $10,000 per year based on our
evaluation of the FAFSA form. Special consideration will be
provided to Bergen Phi Theta Kappa members and Honors Program
participants. Phi Theta Kappa members will receive an additional
$1,000 toward their first year tuition starting Fall, 2005. All
pending graduates of Bergen, who apply to transfer to St. John’s,
will have the application fee waived. Finally, St. John’s
University will provide a Lap Top Computer for each registered,
incoming transfer student, starting Fall, 2005.
