Emergency Medical Services: Growing Field,
Expanding Career Opportunities
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the job outlook for
paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) is expected to
outpace other occupations through 2014. As baby boomers age, the
demand for Emergency Medical Service professionals is expected to
increase with the greatest number of positions in private ambulance services.
You can prepare for this exciting career at the Dr. Andrew J.
Bartilucci Center, part of St. John’s University’s College of
Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. The Center, located 1.2
miles from St. John’s Queens campus in Fresh Meadows, offers New
York State basic and refresher EMT
and paramedic
programs.
Paramedics and EMTs are Allied Health professionals who treat a
cross-section of patients in advanced life support primarily in
pre-hospital settings. They perform a wide variety of emergency
medical services including working as part of a health care team.
Providing continual evaluation and assessment of patient needs and
informing attending doctors of the patient’s progress and response
to treatment.

The Bartilucci Center also offers American
Heart Association courses; pediatric emergency care and
emergency care courses as well as National Safety Council
Defensive Driving and
Weapons of Mass Destruction Preparedness Consortium Awareness-Level
Training Course.
