Academic Service-Learning Department at St. John’s University Thanks Faculty with Appreciation Dinner
May 07, 2008
Recognizing the critical role of faculty in the success of any
university’s service-learning program, St. John’s Academic
Service-Learning hosted the Faculty Appreciation Dinner on
April 29, 2008, which was attended by over 50 faculty members from
several colleges.
Rev. Stephen Bicsko, C.M., Coordinator of Faculty
Training/Development, welcomed the faculty noting that, “There
would be no Academic Service-Learning without you! We are deeply
grateful for all you have done this past year.”

Each faculty member received a certificate and a gift bag as a
small token of appreciation for their willingness to be innovators
in the area of Academic Service-Learning, incorporating elements of
service into their course or in some cases redesigning a course
around a service component.
A special highlight of the event was the presentation of an
award to Fr. Bicsko, C.M. by
Janet Mangione, Associate Director of Academic
Service-Learning. The award was given as an acknowledgement of both
Fr. Bicsko’s 25 years of service at St. John’s University and his
role as a “trailblazer” in the field of Academic
Service-Learning.
In the prayer before the meal, Fr. Bicsko further recognized the
faculty as he said, “Especially bless these outstanding teachers
who instead of ambition are into equality; instead of power are
into service.”
The Academic Service-Learning Department thanks every faculty
member who incorporated Academic Service-Learning into their
courses this past year. It is our hope that many more teachers will
choose to participate in Academic Service-Learning in the coming
year. For more information about adding service-learning to your
courses contact Rev. Bicsko at ext. 6469.
