The Tobin College of Business-SRM-2006 Spencer Scholars
July 05, 2006
Queens Campus (July 05, 2006) -
The School of Risk Management (SRM) within The Tobin College of
Business (TCB) ranked first in the nation in the number of Spencer
Scholarships awarded to graduate students studying risk and
insurance. Other distinguished programs in risk and insurance whose
students also received recognition at the graduate level included
the University of Wisconsin at Madison, which had the second
largest number of graduate scholars, Temple University and Georgia
State. Two SRM undergraduate students were also recognized by The
Spencer Educational Foundation for excellence.
Since 1980, the Spencer Foundation has supported students within
the risk management profession through scholarship programs that
recognize academic excellence as well as through educational
programming. During those years, over $2.7 million in scholarships
and grants have been awarded to risk management students in 62
colleges and universities throughout the United States, Canada, and
the United Kingdom. This was the strongest showing ever among the
ranks of Spencer Scholars for TCB students.
Alea S. Mohammed and Keone A. Wilkie, both undergraduates of The
Tobin College, received $5000 each in scholarship awards in 2006.
In the Master’s category, Wei Chen, Xiaoling Qin, Jianren Xu, and
Weijing Zeng were each awarded $10,000.
Selection for the scholarship awards were based on students who
have excelled in academics and who have shown potential to become
future leaders within the risk management discipline.
