Simcha Pollack

Dr. Simcha Pollack
Professor of Computer Information Systems and Decision Sciences

Dr. Pollack, a 1970 Phi Beta Kappa of the City University of New York, went on to receive his Ph.D. in Applied Statistics and Operations Research from New York University in 1974 as a National Science Foundation Fellow. He continued his post-doctoral research into statistical models of perception at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey.

Dr. Pollack is an internationally recognized scholar in the field of applied statistics. He began teaching at St. John's University in 1979. Since then he has published over 90 papers in prestigious, refereed journals and has participated in over 160 scientific presentations in the United States and abroad.

Dr. Pollack's has two current major research interests. One involves the application of business statistics to issues affecting length and cost of stay in the general hospital. A recent publication in the widely read and influential American Journal of Psychiatry details these findings.

Dr. Pollack's other research interest involves an innovative approach to standard statistical problems known variously as "resampling statistics" of the "bootstrap" it can solve conventional and also unusual statistical problems with a minimum of assumptions and a maximum of understanding. He has introduced these concepts at diverse scientific meetings and in several publications. Students have reacted favorably to this approach.

Dr. Pollack maintains a dynamic professional life. He has a consulting practice and sits on several important committees of the American Statistical Association. His work for the Landmines Research Project through the statistical Model Review Committee contributed publications which in turn have had an important influence on the Pentagon's decision to severely restrict landmine use. Dr. Pollack also contributes to the field by acting as a statistical reviewer for eight journals.

Last, but not least, Dr. Pollack enjoys teaching statistics in the College of Business Administration at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
