Biography
Dr. McDermut received his PhD in clinical psychology from
American University in 1995. He completed his internship at Brown
University’s Clinical Psychology Internship Consortium. He
completed a two year post-doctoral fellowship at Brown University’s
School of Medicine. After receiving a Young Investigator Award from
the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression,
he was appointed to Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Brown
University’s School of Medicine. He then taught psychology for two
years in a newly developed graduate program at William Paterson
University in Wayne, New Jersey, before coming to St John’s
University in 2001. He completed another post-doctoral fellowship
in Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy at the Albert Ellis Institute
from 2002 to 2004.
Research Interests
Dr. McDermut has conducted research on addictions and cognitive
factors in anxiety and depression. He has diverse research
interests in the area of mood disorders, including psychosocial
treatments for depression, and family functioning, comorbidity, and
psychobiology, as they relate to depression. More recently, he has
conducted research on subtypes of depressive disorders, personality
disorders, and the assessment of psychopathology and
personality.
