Academic Lecture Series 2008
Issues Affecting America: Responsible
Citizenship Fall 2008
The President’s Multicultural Advisory Committee is an advisory
group to the President of the University that addresses the broad
issues of multiculturalism in higher education and the specific
multicultural needs of our St. John’s University community. One of
the committee’s functions is to make recommendations to help the
University better serve its increasingly diverse population.
The committee comprises representative faculty, administrators
and students from the Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan campuses.
Each year, the committee holds a Community Forum on each
residential campus to discuss topics of diversity, their impact on
the campus communities and student perceptions.
Reggie Barnes is Director of Multicultural Affairs at St. John’s
University. He began his career in higher education in 1996 as a
Graduate Assistant responsible for developing and managing the
CHAMPS/Life Skills Program for the Department of Athletics. After
working in Service-Learning and spending some time at other
universities, he returned in 2005 to develop the Multicultural
Affairs program on the Staten Island campus. Since then, it has
grown into a unit involved in the training and development of
students on all three campuses. With offices in both Queens and
Staten Island, Mr. Barnes and his staff develop cultural awareness
and celebration programs, advise all cultural and religious student
organizations, facilitate comprehensive diversity education and
training and manage the University’s Global Awareness Project,
which promotes cross-cultural understanding and appreciation by
reshaping the way our students think, communicate and interact with
those who are different from them.
