Issues Affecting America: Responsible
Citizenship Fall 2008
An American music genre, Salsa amalgamates the cultures of
native Puerto Ricans and the NuYoricans in Spanish Harlem.
Catholicism is the catalytic and predominate religion in this
community, so Salsa contains Catholic music, lyrics and
instrumentation. The program includes a lecture and performance on
the history of Salsa and the importance of the native instruments
creating the unique sound of the genre. The instructive concert is
in tandem with an equally didactic exhibition of the national
stringed instrument of Puerto Rico, the cuatro. Included as well in
the exhibition are a tiple, a bordonua, a guiro and a Puerto Rican
guitar, which is carved from 11 a single block of wood and
decorated with geometric chip carvings done in motifs that recall
African decorative art. This guitar is one of two that are still in
existence, and in 1912, was donated to the musical instrument
department at The Metropolitan Museum of Art where Mr. Obando is
the Salsa Consultant.
Currently the CEO of Lubona Group, Salsa Sight.com, Mr. Obando
also is the former Executive Director of the International Salsa
Museum in Spanish Harlem.
