While all University blood drive efforts are coordinated by St.
John’s University’s Office of Community Relations, the Staten
Island campus blood drives are managed by Margaret Ann Tierney, RN,
of the Office of Health and Wellness.
On Sunday, July 13th, 66 pints of blood were collected at the
Music Saves Lives Blood Drive on the Staten Island campus.
Music was provided for donors’ enjoyment by Vincent Innocente, a
St. John's University freshman, and his band It's Not
Over. In addition, Student Government President Juan
Carlos Payero and his brother, Treasurer Juan Thomas Payero, were
also involved with this blood drive and other recent campus drives
to add to the success of the effort.
Close to 1,000 pints of blood have been collected
university-wide in the 2008 calendar year to date, taking place on
the Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan and Oakdale campuses.
“Our University–wide efforts are really paying off in
terms of educating our student population about the need for blood
donations,” said Joseph Sciame, Vice-President for Community
Relations, and a member of the NY Blood Services Community
Relations Council formed in 2007. “This remarkable drive on the
Staten Island campus and the coordinated efforts of Mrs. Tierney
and Messrs. Payero point once again to the generosity of our STJ
Vincentian family in responding to the needs of others, especially
in giving the ‘gift of life’.”
